Safety, health and environment

Safety is a primary concern in refineries. Constant vigilance minimises the risk of accidents in the workplace, as well as incidents that could impact workers and the surrounding local communities. Putting safety first has significantly reduced the number of personal injuries in the refinery industry.

Refineries are bound by the EU Seveso Directive of 1982, which requires internal regular studies on health, safety and environmental risks associated with the refinery’s installations. They are further required to act on these findings, implement incident and emergency plans, cooperate with other installations that could be affected by an incident, ensure information is given to local residents, and conduct on-going checks and inspections.
