A missed opportunity: Postponing the decision on CO2-Neutral Fuels will delay investment decisions

Brussels, 19 January 2024: The Trilogue on CO2 standards for Heavy Duty Vehicles (HDVs) has failed to take on board the Parliament proposal on CO2-Neutral Fuels (CNF).

FuelsEurope supported this proposal as a pragmatic way to accelerate the decarbonisation and - most importantly – provide investors in both the renewable fuel and vehicle manufacturing industry with a case for investment.

The decision on the role of CNF has been postponed and will be reconsidered only in the scope of the revision of the regulation. We trust that the EU Institutions will recognise the benefits of a complementary route to electrification for the decarbonisation of the HDV sector.

Liana Gouta, Director General of FuelsEurope, stated: “In the meantime, we note that a delay in investments for CO2-Neutral Fuels is not only compromising the possibility to decarbonise new vehicles and existing fleets, but is also putting at risk the synergies needed for an accelerated scale-up of renewable fuels for aviation and maritime, as per the EU targets.”
