Steering Group members call to join the Alliance

On the 6th of April 2022, Commissioner Adina Vălean, with the support of key industrial partners and trade associations, launched the Renewable and Low-Carbon Fuels Value Chain Industrial Alliance to boost the supply and support the demand of these fuels in Europe in line with the EU climate ambition by 2050.

The Alliance objective is to ensure that aviation and waterborne transport have sufficient access to renewable and low carbon fuels, while considering the future use of these fuels in land-based transport, and thus contribute to the reduction in the transport sector’s GHG emissions by 90 percent by 2050. Currently, supply of these fuels is very limited and concentrated on road transport leaving aviation and waterborne transport far behind. Demand will quickly grow due to regulatory requirements of ReFuelEU Aviation and FuelEU Maritime when enacted. Therefore, considering their own specificities, and not compromising the use of these fuels in land-based transport, particular focus is needed to develop fuel production, storage and distribution capacity for aviation and waterborne transport.

The European Commission has established a Steering Group with representatives of DG Move, Safran and Fincantieri, as chairs of the aviation and waterborne chambers, and Hydrogen Europe and FuelsEurope, as Members of the Alliance Secretariat, to launch the works of the Alliance. In the first year of the Alliance, the Steering Group will be in charge of proposing a workplan to the General Assembly due to take place in July, and provide steer to its implementation including the setup of thematic roundtables in the second half of 2022 with a view to build a first pipeline of investment projects and address their enabling conditions with a strong focus on the funding and financing support.

The Alliance is a voluntary collaboration of stakeholders from across the transport fuels, other relevant value chains and from the financial sector. The Alliance will constitute a unique opportunity to concretely address the challenge of scaling up the production of affordable sustainable transport fuels in Europe.

The Steering Group is strongly committed to the success of the Alliance and is pleased to invite all stakeholders from sourcing to end-users, representing both the supply side and the demand side from aviation and waterborne sectors as well as civil society organisation, governments and their agencies, technology and finance providers to join us.

To this end, the Steering Group underlines the importance of bringing together all the players that are part in the renewable and low-carbon fuels value chain so that they contribute to and help to make this initiative deliver concrete results in the decarbonisation of the transport sector. The alliance builds on the principle of inclusiveness concerning the different transport modes to reflect the diversification of the customer base that provide new business opportunities and greater resilience over the entire value chain, as well as concerning the relevant technology pathways of the sectors covered. The Alliance also implements a strategically open approach towards the participation of companies and other stakeholders from the EU global partners.
